Lose Opener 2-1; Win Second Game 6-1

The York Revolution split a pair of seven-inning affairs in the first doubleheader in franchise history on Sunday afternoon, losing a 2-1 decision in the opener, while winning by a 6-1 count in the second game against the Long Island Ducks. York’s record now stands at 12-20, while Long Island is at 22-13. The game two win snapped a four game losing streak for the Revolution.

The games were played at Campbell’s Field in Camden, NJ. It marked the 19th and 20th times that the Revolution played in Camden this season. York finishes with an 8-12 record at Campbell’s Field (5-6 as the home team), and the win in the finale snapped an eight-game losing streak at Campbell’s Field, and a five-game “home” losing streak there. The Revs will not see the ballpark again during the regular season until 2008. It served as a home field for York during the ongoing construction process at Sovereign Bank Stadium which is set to open its gates on Friday.

In the opener, Carl Everett gave Long Island all the runs they would need in the first inning with a majestic, long two-run homer down the left-field line. The Ducks strung together four hits overall in the inning, and did not score the rest of the game, managing just three hits over the final six innings against York lefty Chris Steinborn.

York sliced the Long Island lead in half in the second inning, making it a 2-1 game on a Danny Bautista RBI double to right-center that fell out of centerfielder Kevin Haverbusch’s glove on a diving attempt, scoring Nate Espy who led off with a walk.

Bautista went 3-for-3 in the game for York, and was the only batter in Chris Hoiles’ lineup who registered a hit until Kazunori Tanaka ripped a one-out single to left-center in the seventh.

Neither team scored the rest of the way. Steinborn tossed the first complete game in Revs history, going all seven innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits, no walks, and two strikeouts. James Garcia worked five innings for Long Island, allowing just one earned run on two hits, four walks, and four strikeouts. He entered the game having issued 20 walks on the season, tied for second-most in the Atlantic League.

Ben Grezlovski fired a scoreless sixth for the Ducks, while former National League all-star closer Danny Graves worked a scoreless ninth for his ninth save, which ranks second in the league.

Garcia (3-2) took the win, while Steinborn (2-4) suffered the loss. Game one was played in a snappy one hour and 44 minutes.

In the second game, lefty Steve Smyth made his first appearance for York after being signed the previous day. His teammates spotted him an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first against Ducks starter Tim Cain. Tanaka, leading off for the fourth time this season (twice in the doubleheader), worked a leadoff walk. Ramon Nivar followed with a single to left, and Peter Bergeron sacrificed both into scoring position with a bunt. Third baseman Damian Rolls airmailed the throw to first, and with the ball entering the stands, Tanaka was awarded home with the game’s first run. Danny Bautista and Nate Espy skied back-to-back sacrifice flies bringing home the other two runs.

The Ducks answered with a run in the top of the second on an RBI groundout by Derek Wathan, scoring Rob Cafiero who led off with a single to center. The groundout was the first of 16 straight hitters retired by York pitching. Smyth retired the final eight that he faced, allowing just one run on two hits in four innings of work. Chris Cooper tossed a 1-2-3 fifth, while the newly acquired Frank Castillo, who was also signed prior to yesterday’s game, retired the side in order in the sixth. Franklin Nunez finished off the string by retiring the first two that he faced in the seventh.

York added to the lead in the fourth inning. Danny Bautista blooped a single to right, snapping a string of nine consecutive retired by Cain. Bautista came around to score on Matt Dryer’s RBI single to left-center,
