BARCELO BLANKS RIVERSHARKS, FINISHING WHAT HE STARTED IN GAME TWO

Pitching and timely hitting ruled the day as the York Revolution swept a twi-night doubleheader from the Camden Riversharks, winning 5-2 and 3-0 at Sovereign Bank Stadium.  The Revs, now leading the second half standings by 4.0 games, will go for the series sweep on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Lorenzo Barcelo (3-0) stymied the Sharks with a complete game three-hit shutout in the nightcap, while Corey Thurman (11-3) won his tenth consecutive decision head-to-head against Camden in the opener.

Thurman allowed just two runs in five innings in game one.  The 11 wins ranks second in the league (tops among active pitchers), and ties the highest total of his Revs career, having won double figures in three of his four seasons in a York uniform.  He is one win shy of matching the Revs’ single-season club record.  He also now owns a club record-tying five-game winning streak for the second time this season.

The Revs built a lead in the opener scoring in four consecutive innings, beginning with a double play in the second inning hit into by Vince Harrison to plate the first run.  Ramon Castro drove in a run on a ground rule double with two outs in the third, Harrison ripped an RBI single in the fourth, and Castro and Chris Nowak each posted sacrifice flies in the fifth.

Noah Hall’s two-run homer in the sixth inning accounted for Camden’s lone run in 14 innings of baseball on Monday evening.

R.J. Rodriguez retired all three batters faced in relief of Thurman in the sixth, and Michael Nix earned his 17th save with a perfect seventh.

Barcelo was the story in game two, facing just one batter over the minimum.  He allowed only three singles, the first two of which were erased on attempted steals as catcher Salvador Paniagua threw out both Ruddy Yan in the first and Juan Francia in the third.  Barcelo faced the minimum through 5.2 innings, and ended the game with back-to-back strikeouts for his third win in three starts.  He has tossed seven scoreless innings in two of those three starts.

Jose Herrera drove in a first inning run on a single up the middle and added an RBI groundout in the third.  Nowak also delivered an RBI single in the third for York.

Scott Grimes scored two runs in each game of the doubleheader.  Herrera went a combined 4-for-6 at the plate as the Revs pounded 11 hits in each game.

Notes: The doubleheader sweep is the Revs’ second this season, both vs. Camden.  Thurman improves to 10-1 vs. Camden in his Revs career with a 1.96 ERA and has now held opponents to three earned runs or fewer in 19 of his 22 starts this season.  Grimes’ stolen base in the opener was the 47th of his Revs career, tying Keoni DeRenne (2007-09) for York’s career record.  Barcelo’s shutout was the third of his career and second this season including his time in the Mexican League (his other shutout came in 1997 with High-A San Jose).  It was also his eighth career complete game and fourth this season between Puebla and York.  The complete game was the Revs’ third of the season, and the complete game shutout was York’s second in the last ten days after having only recorded one previously in franchise history (2007).  The Revs tie a club record with their eighth shutout of the year.  The Revs also tie a club record reaching 16 games over .500, and their four-game division lead is their largest since the end of the first half in 2010.  Nix’s save in game one was his sixth in the month of August tying the Revs’ record for saves in a month.  The Revs are now 11-3 vs. Camden for the season, 8-0 at Sovereign Bank Stadium with one remaining.  They’ve never gone unbeaten against an opponent at home; their best mark was 9-1 vs. Lancaster at home last season.  The Revs are also going for their club record tenth sweep of the season on Tuesday.  Shaun Garceau (4-7, 5.14) will face J.R. Mathes (5-5, 4.59) in the finale at 6:30 p.m. with gates opening at 5:30 p.m.  It is a Fill Your Tummy Tuesday and WellSpan Health Silver Sluggers Tuesday.  Tickets are available at YorkRevolution.com, (717) 801-HITS and in-person at the Apple Chevrolet Ticket Office.
